Yes, you could buy them, but why not learn to make your own birthstone charms!
These sweet little dangle birthstone charms are surprisingly easy to make if you have a simple set of pliers and a few inexpensive materials. The look adorable on their own dangling from a pair of ear wires or with a jump ring they can easily be added to a charm necklace or personalized necklace.
Here’s what you’ll need:
(2) Chain Nose Pliers
(1) Round Nose Pliers
(1) Cutting Pliers
(1) Ballpin – I prefer 26 gauge because I like tiny gems with tiny holes, but 24 gauge will probably work in most cases. 1″ length is plenty long. You could also use a headpin if you don’t want the ball at the bottom, but I like the little ball, don’t you? Another option, if you don’t have a headpin or ball pin, is to just use a bit of half hard wire and make a little loop at the bottom.
(1) Pearl or gemstone in approximately 4mm size
(1) 20 gauge jump ring in ~ 5mm (OD) outer diameter
Step 1: Slide pearl or stone onto the ball pin. Using your chain nose pliers, grab the ball pin just above the stone (so that it’s actually touching the stone). Bend wire to a 90 degree angle by pressing the wire down to lay parallel with the pliers. Here’s what it will look like:
Step 2: Now, using your round nose pliers, gently pinch the wire above and below the 90 degree angle. Using your other hand wrap the wire around the top of the round nose pliers. You may need rotate your pliers slightly as you go. This is the trickiest step, but after a few tries you’ll get the hang of it.
You may need to use your pliers to do a tiny bit of adjusting, but it should look similar to this:Step 3: Gently grab the flat side of the loop between your chain nose pliers and with the opposite hand tightly wrap the tail around approximately 3 times until it meets the stone. Step 4: Using your cutters cut the remaining wire “tail” off. Unless you have really good cutters you might still have a tiny tail left which you can simply squeeze down with your flat nose pliers because no one likes scratchy jewelry.Step 5: Add a jump ring 🙂
Delicate, sweet, and versatile!
