If you've been keeping an eye on it, you know that the price of gold is way up. In fact I believe it reached an all-time high in recent days.  There are several ways incorporate gold into your wardrobe and designs without the hefty price tag, but one of my favorite ways is vermeil.

I have quite a few new vermeil pieces in my shop.  Most of which feature that super bright gold tone with a nice matte finish, which I love!

Gold vermeil is a term that is often used in the jewelry industry, but what exactly does it mean? Let's dive into the world of gold vermeil to understand this popular technique.

What is Gold Vermeil?

Gold vermeil is a type of jewelry that consists of a thick layer of gold plated over sterling silver. In order to be considered vermeil, the gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick and the base metal must be sterling silver. This process creates a high-quality piece of jewelry that is more affordable than solid gold.

How is Gold Vermeil Made?

The process of creating gold vermeil involves several steps. First, the sterling silver base is polished and cleaned to ensure a smooth surface. Then, a thin layer of gold is applied using a technique called electroplating. This layer is much thicker than traditional gold plating, giving the piece its durability and long-lasting shine.

Is Gold Vermeil Hypoallergenic?

One of the benefits of gold vermeil is that it is generally considered hypoallergenic. Since the base metal is sterling silver, which is less likely to cause skin irritation, and the thick layer of gold acts as a protective barrier, gold vermeil is a great option for those with sensitive skin.

How to Care for Gold Vermeil Jewelry?

To ensure that your gold vermeil jewelry lasts for years to come, it is important to take proper care of it. Avoid exposing your jewelry to harsh chemicals, such as perfumes or cleaning products, and remove it before swimming or showering. To clean your gold vermeil pieces, simply use a soft cloth to gently polish them.

Now that you have a better understanding of what gold vermeil is and how it is made, you can appreciate the craftsmanship and beauty of this popular jewelry option. Whether you're looking for a stylish accessory or a thoughtful gift, gold vermeil is a versatile choice that combines the luxury of gold with the affordability of sterling silver.
